the sunflower and the honey bee

Once upon a time, there was a lovely Sunflower growing in a garden. She had a large, round, brown face surrounded by golden petals like the rays of the sun. But she was sad, and her leaves were drooping, because she didn’t have any friends.

One day, Sunflower heard an interesting sound. It sounded like, “Bzzz… bzzz… bzzz….” She wondered what it could be. It was a Honey Bee, and she flew up to Sunflower and said, “Sunflower, Sunflower, may I taste a bit of your pollen?”

“Yes,” nodded Sunflower, and so Honey Bee took a little taste. Then off she flew back to the hive, where she shared a taste of the pollen with all of her friends. “Honey Bee, Honey Bee,” they all said, “Where did you find such delicious pollen?” “From my friend the Sunflower in the garden,” said Honey Bee. “Can you show us the way?” her friends asked her. “Yes,” she said, and the very next day off she flew with all of her friends to visit Sunflower.

All the bees swarmed around Sunflower’s head. “Sunflower, Sunflower,” they all said, “May we taste a bit of your pollen?” “Yes,” nodded Sunflower, and each bee took a little taste. Then off they flew back to the hive, where they worked so industriously, making sweet golden honey that the farmer shared with the children, who ate it on their toast and on their oatmeal in the mornings. The bees also worked hard making beeswax that smelled so sweet, just like honey. The children later rolled this beeswax into candles that they wrapped carefully with tissue paper and gave to their parents as gifts.

From then on, Sunflower was never sad again. Each day her honey bee friends came to visit her and take away a little taste of pollen. Each place where the bees kissed Sunflower a little sunflower seed grew. Sunflower’s beautiful round brown face looked up to the sun, and her leaves reached up to the heavens, for she was so happy to have so many friends.
